To Preschool or not to Preschool...?

How may of you out there did not send your little ones to Preschool?

Am I the only one out there? My eldest went to Preschool for a bit. (He is now in second grade.) But, my youngest has not. He will be starting Kindergarten in the Fall. I'm starting to regret not sending him to Preschool now. He is really active. I mean really active.

I have a question, though... Why isn't there Preschool in the public school system, like there is Kindergarten. I mean not everyday or anything. But, Why not 3 half days a week? Or something like that? I know all parents out there can necessarily afford to send their kids daycare / preschool. It certainly isn't cheap.

So, do you think I'm nuts for not sending the little one to Preschool? What kind of advice can you guys give me to prepare him for Kindergarten? Any and all forms of advice are welcome and appreciated.

  1. Hi there! I myself was not sent to preschool and then started kindergarten when was about to turn 5. I think it was my age and the closeness of my birthday to the start date of school that was the reasoning behind it.

However (and this is just MY personal take)I wish that I was sent to preschool before kindergarten. I was really behind and ended up repeating 2nd grade (which was the best thing that ever happened to me!I was an A student from then on.)

My mom even asked if I should go into a developmental kindergarten before first grace and the school told her no and that I was fine... But I really needed that extra time.

I think it really depends most on the child and parent though. Had my mom trusted her gut I may not have had to repeat 2nd grade.. and missed out on a lot of teasing lol... But everything worked out in the end :)

  3. I've often wondered why there isn't a public preschool like there is kindergarten - the only preschools I found out here were pretty much a glorified daycare, and were priced about the same - not something that would work with our budget, especially since I decided to stay home rather than go back to work.

I've found it interesting, at least here in my small town, that people tend to be judgey when you haven't sent your child to preschool. It certainly didn't adversely affect Princess Nagger to not have gone to preschool - in fact, I was so worried that she might be 'behind' the other kids in her class when she started kindergarten, I inadvertently taught her everything she was going to learn (alphabet, numbers, colors, counting, etc.) She was lucky that she got an amazing kindergarten teacher who recognized her being ahead of the class, and pushed to get her started in the Gifted Program sooner rather than later - and she's still progressing at a rapid pace (which then causes the problem of boredom...heh!)

I decided not to send Little Dude to preschool, either - he'll be starting kindergarten in the fall, and while he's polar opposite of Princess Nagger (and way more active - it might be a 'boy' thing) I still don't feel that preschool would benefit him any more than me working with him one-on-one to get him 'ready'. Maybe he'll surprise me like Princess Nagger certainly did. :)

Are you crazy for not sending the little one to preschool? Definitely not - besides, that means I'm crazy, too. ;) So you're not alone! :)

Thanks so much for following me on Twitter so I could 'find' you - I'm following you here and on Facebook now, and I'm tickled to see you hail from my home state! My parents and siblings (and all other relatives) all still live in Washington State - and we're thankfully (and finally!!!) moving back this summer - I can't wait to be 'home' again. :)
